How Can Stress Effect IVF Treatment

Fertility and anxiety

Stress May Cause Infertility

Suffering from infertility causes stress and a research study finds that stress may be causing infertility.  For thousands of years stress has been linked to infertility. After all, infertility causes depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation and all that leads to stress.

The research study found females with high levels of an enzyme, alpha-amylase, that corresponds with stress, have a more difficult time conceiving. 274 women over 6 months of menstrual cycles (or until pregnancy) had salvia samples taken. The research revealed that those with the highest concentration of enzyme during the 1st cycle were 12% less likely to get pregnant that the women with the lower levels.

Also, women that participated in the study, published in 2010 in the journal Fertility and Sterility, had no prior history of infertility. Women who participated were trying to get pregnant for less than three month or planning to get pregnant.

If you feel that stress is influencing your chances of getting pregnant, the best way to improve those chances are by managing it. In a research study published in 2003 by the head of the department of gynecology and obstetrics at Emory University School of Medicine, 7 out of 8 patients who received stress therapy saw fertility improvements versus the 2 out of 8 who received no help.
